Description: At first I thought, "somewhere between Ballard and Amis," but I gradually realizedAt first I thought, "somewhere between Ballard and Amis," but I gradually realized there wasn't much if any Amis influence after all -- none of the really dry, sardonic wit. I settled on mostly Ballard and a bit of Nicholson Baker, but not much. I'll have to think about this one a bit more, which is good, it'll stick with me, I suspect in much the same way Luke Rhinehart's "The Dice Man" has. Cautiously recommended....

The poetic style of McCarthy's prose is evocative; however, where he's strong on setting the mood for parable, his main character is slight and the prose style is distracting when the reader is left incredulous that the characters never think in terms of names, or recall much of anything about their past, but the author's busting out the thesaurus to make artsy sentence fragments. ...
