Description: This book is much worse than the first. The first one, I'd say couldn't hurt you. TheThis book is much worse than the first. The first one, I'd say couldn't hurt you. The second one is a travesty. Read my review of "Parable of the Sower" for my complaints about Earthseed, the religion that the author has the protagonist create. If it was bad in the last book, it is much, much worse in this book. It's so fake. Then there's the whole deus ex machina that Butler really needs to learn how to control. She uses it over and over again to get her characters into and out of horrible situations again and again. While this is sometimes believable, she uses it too frequently. Then there's the whole horror factor. Pretty much ever other paragraph somebody is getting murdered, raped, killed, tortured, robbed, or endless variations of the same. While some of it is actually pertinent to the book, and without it the book would be even more useless than it is, I feel like a lot of it is just there for shock factor, to get the reader to feel for the characters and the situations they are in. However, it just made me disgusted, because the book isn't actually good enough to read through that. The message doesn't transcend it, which is probably not the effect Butler was going for....
