Description: I just finished 'A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive'I just finished 'A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive' about ten minutes ago and I have to say that this is the most inspiring book I have ever read. It was also the hardest book for me to read and not only because my tears obscured my vision so often and blurred the words together, but because I became so emotionally involved that I wanted to stop reading. Rage was constantly clawing at my insides and an immense sadness took hold of me as I read what Dave's "Mother" put him through. I had to stop reading it for several hours because I had started shaking and was worried I would be ill. Obviously, this book was written in such a way that any human being that reads it feels what Dave felt as a child and reacts strongly to his memories. I believe that this is possibly the best thing about the book as people really do need to feel what it's like to go through these things so that they can understand the effects abuse can have on a person and the repercussions it has on their families.
It was an exhausting read that made me appreciate my own childhood, however imperfect it was, and think about not only the world in general but how I as someone who was abused can break the cycle as Dave was able to do. His strength and courage are absolutely incredible. There is no possible way someone can read this book and not be in awe of Dave's character. Even before he was rescued he was a role model and someone I will always look up to for his achievements in all their various shapes and forms.
This book is a must-read for everyone and I highly recommend that you buy it and read it every once in a while, especially if you ever feel yourself losing hope in a situation. Dave's story has a lot of powerful messages that can help you get through whatever it is that's plaguing you. It's a short book but it's packed with an intensity of raw emotion that I have never seen in any other book. Again, I must suggest that you buy it and read it at least once every year. It would be impossible to regret reading this book....
