Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal
Required reading. Fast Food Nation covers the history and breadth of the fast foo industry in the US, starting before there was a McDonald's, travelling through the potato farms and slaughterhouses, and ending in the driver's seat. It is an in-depth look (though limites to the US) covering the technology of burgers, the ethics of meat, the labor involved... excellent.
