The New York Trilogy
I bought this on recommendation from a friend's housemate, who recommended it to me as a writer, when I was on the verge of moving to New York.
I'm not sure, had I found a copy in my first year of being there, that I would have appreciated the recommendation.
However, it took me three years to track down a copy (in a handy re-issue), and all three titles are amazing. Disorienting, verbally beautiful, and some of the best modern writing around. Paul Auster has few equals right now, and I'll read anything he writes.
