16? 17? year old Bella Swan moves to rural Washington state to live with her father, but she's not very happy about it -- until she falls in love with Edward, the most gorgeous, mysterious boy who sits next to her in biology. Of course, it turns out that Edward -- and the rest of his adopted family -- are a tribe of 'civilized' vampires, consciously choosing to live off wild animals (camping trips every other weekend) rather than people. Bella and Edward fall hopelessly in love, but can barely touch or kiss -- as Edward must keep control of his desires (for her neck, etc.). Full of chaste longing. Danger appears when a rogue vampire comes into the territory and sets his target on having Bella as a victim. She survives, but the danger inherent in her relationship with Edward remains. Not to mention the other possible love interest of Jacob, native American and member of a tribe who has known these 'civilized' vampires down through the ages and so try to warn her about them. Liked the book well enough, though don't think I'll continue with the series unless I read some gripping reviews....
