The Da Vinci Code

Interesting idea, to some extent, but poorly executed. Turgid prose, ridiculous situations don't make for much of a read.

This book is actually so poorly written, with such cardboard cut-out character development that it is a source of wonder to me that it is a best-seller as opposed to candidate for the discard bin.

ssong: it depends on your point of view on that book. For me, it was entertaining.

Yeah, there was a lot of hype for the book, but like kuchin said it was a very entertaining book...

I think ssong's judgement might be a little harsh. Compared to Eco's "The Name of the Rose" sure, Brown's writing is pedestrian; however, it strikes me as unfair to slag this book for not being high art. I don't think Brown was shooting for anything more than an engaging suspense story utilizing some heady themes. Expecting a pop bestseller like "DaVinci Code" to be anything more than what it is, that's like trying to compare a decent Jackie Chan chopsocky movie to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The latter transcends genre and formula, the former uses genre and formula to deliver accessible entertainment; there's room enough in world for both types of movies and books.

If your opinion is that this book fails even as light entertainment, then that's another story. I'm surprised that the manner in which Brown weaves in Grail mythology and alternative/heretical Christian themes doesn't at least make up for the shortcomings in characterization - but, as the other commenters have mentioned, 'to each their own.' Compared to other bestsellers (I'm thinking of the likes of Tom Clancy and John Grisham) I think this book more than holds its own.

cdogzilla: my opinion, at least, is that this book fails as light entertainment.

I wouldn't compare a book like The Da Vinci Code to books with higher aspirations; I would compare it to the other books on my shelf that are supposed to be nothing more than a good read. I have some pretty embarrassing books on my shelf but The Da Vinci Code fails even compared to them.

Dan Brown has no idea what he's talking about. He either didn't do or didn't understand the most basic research. Neither his plot nor his characters are believable. Stylistically, his writing is so bad that I could tell by the first *sentence* that read The Da Vinci Code would either painful or very, very amusing. (It turned out to be a combination of both.)

Put me down on the list of people who are baffled by his success.

I haven't seen a book like this where you start the book only to hang on and finish it in one go.
