The Namesake : A Novel

The reader follows the life of Gogol and his parents from the time his parents meet and move to America, through Gogol's birth and into his adulthood. The novel provides an excellent view of the difficulties of acculturation and the struggles a bicultural child can experience as he tries to find his identity on the borderland between two separate worlds that don't fully accept him. The writting is good, but the plot is obvious and very predictable. If you concentrate on the characters and especially on Gogol's identity conflict, it is an enjoyable read. I had to read it for an ESL couse I am taking and I recommend it to anyone interested in teaching within a multicultural setting.
