The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book 1)

I always read books before I recommend them to my students. While this book is very interesting and well-written, I would not recommend it to my students as the final premise of the triliogy is that God is just a figment of our imagination and "the church" controls us by encouraging belief in God. Very misleading for Scholastic to trump this series as the next Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe or Lord of the Rings. Essentially Pullman pits religion against children and truth.
