The Pillars of the Earth
Set around the seemingly dull topic of the building of a cathedral in Middle Ages England, this story is gripping from the beginning. I can't recommend it highly enough. The characters are a little 2-dimensional in that they're either wholly good or wholly evil but the various plots and sub-plots keep you turning the pages.
