Picoult’s novel, an intricate tapestry woven from the many voices of the Fitzgerald family, raises more questions than it answers. Do we have the obligation to risk our own health to save a family member? Do our parents have the right to make medical decisions and donor decisions for their children? What is legal and what is ethical in situations like this? Nothing is ever black or white, is it? Picoult weaves a powerfully emotional picture of sisters, growing up and a family in turmoil.
