The Onion Girl

I have read this book twice. The first time, as a teenager, I liked Jillie's story but thought that the crow/dog/man into the desert part was not as interesting. The second time, now, I see different things. Such as, it is not really worth reading twice-- I only took it out from the library again because I had forgotten that I read it. While it is probably worth a read for those who love fantasy but can't stand the style in which most fantasists write it (i.e. "Galbreath stood sweating in the sun next to his sheath-master, who look upon the caravan bound for Hanahana'iii. They would reach the eleventh city, if the wol-dons, didn't attack, by the next high moon." and such crap) Yes, De Lint is a capable writer, and his mainstream style has earned him praise. Some ignoramuses, who think that fantasy is a synonym for junk, actually don't understand that this is indeed the genre that he writes. Anyway, a decent book, though De Lint burdens it at times with his own personal agenda and opinions in the guise of Jillie's (her artist interviews are really a forum for De Lint.)
