This book is a very old friend, and very dear. I almost forgot it existed, and having a cheap used copy literally fall into my hands yesterday was like finding $50 in an old pair of jeans. Muriel Spark said in an interview that for her writing is “like taking dictation from god,” and I would have laughed when I read that if it wasn’t so completely plausible. Highly, highly recommended. Or recommended from on high. Whatever. Read it and follow up with a nice cold dose of Miss Jean Brodie. *****
