The Iliad

This is a fairly new translation (copyright 1997) and it was a very interesting read. Done in colloquial American speech, it came across at first as very crass, unlike older flowery translations. The translator says that this was intentional, trying to copy the direct style of the original. It made for easy understanding, and had the flow of a oral performance. I enjoyed reading it, and was surprised how little I remembered from when I read it along ago. For instance how much of the Trojan legend happens before or after the events of the Iliad.
