Harper Lee beautifully uses the symbol of the mockingbird, a bird that is forbidden to be killed because of its innocense. In this way the main characters, Scout, Jem, and Tom Robinson, are so like this bird, as well as the recluse Boo Radley, who we are vaguely introduced to at the beginning of the novel. And despite the terrible rumours surrounding Tom and Boo, in the end Scout realizes that people had made false assumptions about them, and concludes that most people are good, 'when you really get to know them'....
