Compared to Eco's "The Name of the Rose" sure, Brown's writing is pedestrian; however, it strikes me as unfair to slag this book for not being high art. I don't think Brown was shooting for anything more than an engaging suspense story utilizing some heady themes. Expecting a pop bestseller like "DaVinci Code" to be anything more than what it is, that's like trying to compare a decent Jackie Chan chopsocky movie to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The latter transcends genre and formula, the former uses genre and formula to deliver accessible entertainment; there's room enough in world for both types of movies and books.

If your opinion is that this book fails even as light entertainment, then that's another story. I'm surprised that the manner in which Brown weaves in Grail mythology and alternative/heretical Christian themes doesn't at least make up for the shortcomings in characterization - but, as the other commenters have mentioned, 'to each their own.' Compared to other bestsellers (I'm thinking of the likes of Tom Clancy and John Grisham) I think this book more than holds its own.
