One of the most widely read and translated theorists of the former Soviet Union, Yurii Lotman was a daring and imaginative thinker. A cofounder of the Tartu-Moscow school of semiotics, he analyzed a broad range of cultural phenomena, from the opposition between Russia and the West to the symbolic construction of space, from cinema to card playing, from the impact of theater on painting to the impact of land-scape design on poetry. His insights have been particularly important in conceptualizing the creation of meaning and understanding the function of art and literature in society, and they have enriched the work of such diverse figures as Paul Ricoeur, Stephen Greenblatt, Umberto Eco, Wolfgang Iser, Julia Kristeva, and Federic Jameson. In this volume edited by Andreas Schonle, contributors extend Lotman's theories to a number of fields. Focusing on his less frequently studied later period, "Lotman and Cultural Studies" engages with such ideas as the "semiosphere," the fluid, dynamic semiotic environment out of which meaning emerges; "auto-communication," the way in which people create narratives about themselves that in turn shape their self-identity; change, as both gradual evolution and an abrupt, unpredictable "explosion;" power; law and mercy; Russia and the West; center and periphery.

His innovative theories of thought and speech are important not only for psychology but for other disciplines also - linguistics, education, semiotics and sociology. As the ideas of Piaget have decreased in popularity so those of Vygotsky have increased and his impact in these other areas has begun to be felt. This is especially so in the field of education, and in Charting the Agenda Harry Daniels has brought together a range of experts to explore the work of Vygotsky and its influence and impact for educational practice. The book is divided into three parts. The first two provide a general introduction to Vygotsky's work and explore the theoretical developments. The final part is concerned with the educational implications of Vygotsky's work.

It will force the reader to think in new and fruitful ways about such dichotomies as transmissions vs. ritual, administrative vs. critical, positivist vs. marxist, and cultural vs. power-orientated approaches to communications study. An historically inspired treatment of major figures and theories, required reading for the sophisticated scholar' - George Gerbner, University of Pennsylvania "...offers a mural of thought with a rich background, highlighted by such thoughts as communication being the 'maintenance of society in time'." - Cast/Communication Booknotes These essays encompass much more than a critique of an academic discipline. Carey's lively thought, lucid style, and profound scholarship propel the reader through a wide and varied intellectual landscape, particularly as these issues have affected Modern American thought. As entertaining as it is enlightening, Communication as Culture is certain to become a classic in its field.
The main media studied on university courses (advertising, magazines, the press, TV, cinema, "new media" including computer games, the Internet and the World Wide ) are all addressed substantially and in separate detailed chapters. New material in this second edition includes sections on men's style magazines, docusoaps and "reality TV", digital interactive television, and mobile phone text messaging. It begins by explaining the concept of the sign and the ideological roles of media in contemporary culture and then scrutinises advertisements, glossy magazines, daily newspapers, TV programmes, recent films, and interactive media, with each chapter containing close analyses of particular examples. Key strands in critical theory such as ideology and psychanalytic theory are explored and challenges to established semiotic methods posed by audience studies and postmodernism are discussed.
In a world increasingly mediated, it offers insights into our ways of consuming texts that are both brilliant and bold. Dancing through semiotics, reader-response criticism, the value of the apostrophe and much more, Jonathan Culler opens up for every reader the closed world of literary criticism. Its impact on first publication, in 1981, was immense; now, as Mieke Bal notes, 'the book has the same urgency and acuity that it had then', though today it has even wider implications: 'with the interdisciplinary turn taking hold, literary theory itself, through this book, becomes a much more widespread tool for cultural analysis'.
He has a multi-faceted claim to fame: to some he is the structuralist who outlined a 'science of literature', and the most prominent promoter of semiology; and to others, he stands not for science but pleasure, espousing a theory of literature which gives the reader a creative role. This book describes the many projects, which Barthes explored and which helped to change the way we think about a range of cultural phenomena - from literature, fashion, wrestling, and advertising, to notions of the self, of history, and of nature.

He begins by examining the relations between semiotics and history and between semiotics and specific communities. He elaborates on the nature of these relations by demonstrating the "effective semiotics" of a particular photograph from the 1880s, episodes from the film Singin' in the Rain and the Batman comics, literary works, children's primers, popular accounts of science, and many other objects, artifacts, and experiences.

We are confronted with altered modes of work, communication, and entertainment; new postindustrial and political networks; novel approaches to warfare; genetic engineering; and even cloning. This compelling book explores the challenges to theory, politics, and human identity that we face on the threshold of the third millennium. It follows on the successor of Best and Kellner's two previous books, Postmodern Theory, acclaimed as the best critical introduction to the field - and The Postmodern Turn, which provides a powerful mapping of postmodern developments developments in the arts, politics, science, and theory. In The Postmodern Adventure, Best and Kellner analyze a broad array of literary, cultural, and political phenomena from fiction, film, science, and the Internet, to globalization and the rise of a transnational image culture. They use the best of modern and postmodern perspectives to illuminate contemporary life and to strive for a just and viable future.
