Fresh from their most recent adventures inside an autistic boy’s mind (A Wizard Alone), wizard partners Nita and Kit are offered an unexpected windfall--a cultural exchange program halfway across the galaxy to a seemingly perfect world--when Nita’s wizard whiz-kid sister Dairine misbehaves and is galactically grounded by her mentor. Meanwhile, Dairine, stuck at home, plays host to three alien counterparts in the cultural exchange. For once, it seems like everyone will get a little break--there are no universes to save, no underwater exploits, no battles between good and evil. Which brings us back to that wizardly joke. As Nita realizes at the conclusion of Wizard’s Holiday, the "Powers That Be" never send any wizard anywhere without reason. It’s up to the wizards to figure out just what that reason is--and get on with the business of saving universes and battling evil. Excellent, intelligent writing, with enough technology intermingled with magic to please the palate of every fantasy and science fiction reader. Even readers outside the genre should take a look; you won’t be disappointed!

Initially, Kit finds himself flying solo as Nita has sunk into a deep depression over her mother's recent death. Luckily, his telepathic pooch, Ponch, is happy to fill Nita's niche temporarily, as long as biscuits are involved. Kit tries to understand why autistic wizard-in-training Darryl McAllister has been stuck in his Ordeal, or initiation, for over three months. Is it merely the fault of his autism? Inside Darryl's mind, Kit and Ponch find complex landscapes of weird beauty that belie Darryl's rocking, vacant exterior. But they also find the Lone Power, attacking Darryl with an unrelenting brutality that is excessive, even for the Source of all Evil. Meanwhile, Nita is distracted from her sadness by trying to discover the meaning of a series of strange dreams in which a being is pleading for her aid. Could the dreams be a call for help from Darryl? And if so, will Kit and Nita come together in time to destroy the Lone Power before it destroys them?

They argue over a spell to clean up the pollution in New York's Jones Inlet, and from that point on, they can't connect on anything. Is it adolescence that's tearing them apart or something more profound? Meanwhile, Nita and her family are stunned to discover that her mother has cancer, and there's a possibility that nothing--not surgery, not even wizardry--can fight it. Nita refuses to let her mom go down without a fight, however, and soon she's on a mission that brings her face-to-face with the Lone Power, source of all death in the universe--Nita's worst enemy, and possibly her only hope.

But when the family PC clones itself and suggests Dairine go to New York, Nita and Kit go along as chaperones, determined to keep her out of trouble. But they're too late: Dairine has read the book of wizardry and is on her wizard's test. There's nothing that the two girls can do to help her, as she must complete the difficult and dangerous test by herself. Duane is tops in the high adventure business, and her latest offering is no exception. Deftly pairing comic and sensitive scenes, this rollicking yarn will delight readers as they watch Dairine's transformation from pesky kid sister to strong-willed heroine.

The problems of everyday adolescent life and the mysteries of magic are perfectly blended, along with plenty of humor and suspense. In a starred review, School Library Journal wrote, "well-structured and believable... this fantasy should have wide appeal." Horn Book wrote, "a splendid, unusual fantasy... an outstanding, original work."

The novel is overlong and densely crammed with bewildering jargon, but the basic plot strands are compelling, particularly one set among a hive society reminiscent of Orson Scott Card's buggers. Even early series fans who have since outgrown Duane's particular brand of pseudoscientific mysticism may be attracted by the cameo appearances of previous books' characters and references to past story lines. The full-cast-reunion aspect prevents this from standing alone, but keep the overall series in mind for Harry Potter buffs whose interests are broad enough to allow them to easily move between Rowling's genteel, mock-Eton fantasy and traditional sf.

Many will remember this great poet (for though he wrote prose, he was a master among poets) for his famous "Forty Days of Musagh Dagh." Star of the Unborn is neither tragedy nor comedy, but rather an attractive piece of pathos. Franz Werfel lived and died true to his facts: a physical and spiritual exile. His works represent a consistent attempt to escape from harsh realities by absorption in mysticism and especially in the mysteries of Catholic theology. In his last book, the author takes a fantastic look into the future. He spends three days in what he calls the Eleventh Cosmic Capital Year of Virgo (about 100,000 years from now). In the course of an intricately woven plot, the reader is treated to skillful, and at times moving descriptions of an "astromental" world, visits to Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter; the proper does of sex interest, and a battle between higher civilization and "jungle" humanity. Thus, there is much to remember, and also much to forget.Occasional flashbacks, probing Franz Werfel's past, provide some of the best writing in the book. The only two institutions depicted as surviving in this far, far future from the 20th century are the Catholic Church and the Jew. In structure and detail, the book is imbued with Catholic feeling and doctrine. He treats the Grand Bishop as the final source of wisdom. Yet even with the Church, Werfel is not at home, his tone is a mixture of seriousness, arrogance and flippancy. Thus, in spiritual exile, Werfel spent his last year on skillfully wrought mixture of melodrama, rather crude superstition, pseudo-scientific fantasy, and occasional flashes of insight and wisdom. His writing is always powerful, but his thoughts are at times confusing. He seems always to be searching for something he never quite found. His attempts were magnificent, and his talents were among the greatest. Perhaps he knew all the time that he was wasting his great talents probing into an alien faith, one in which he was still floundering, for he wrote in his first chapter of Star of the Unborn: "My time is short and I am wasting it unscrupulously." What a pity!
