I was a little worried when I started it because Ms Rice built the story on theology that was a bit... idolatrous. But she built an excellent story that turned on some wonderful principles. It was an audio-book, but one that I listened to intensely.

I listened to it driving home to Toronto. The first story was an early version of the Dune story, and focused on some of relationships in the books. It has been a while since I read it, and this was a a great re-introduction. Unfortunately, the other chapters were snippets of other scenes, so they did not build nearly as well without intimate knowledge of the books, which I've lost over the last decades. But it did stir me to re-read the old books and read the ones I've not yet discovered.

I've followed Alvin since he started in Prentice Alvin and enjoyed every step of the way. It was good to see the return to water and the Unmaker in this one, and there were continual branches back to book one: even though they were not essential to understand the plot-line.

I attended Bible College for some years and remember that some of my contemporaries has trouble with some of Ms. L'Engle's apparent theology. But it was not a book of theology: it was a book that explored life. We neglected that in our interpretation. I am very glad I stuck with her: I have learned more through her writing than any book on what theology is supposed to be about.
