However, I currently live one block from Jane & Finch, near a school that could be McLarens. Although I see, and have seen all my life, incidents such as the ones that are described iin the book, they are by far the only ones. My high school, one of those nearby, is now also known as the only Toronto High School where a student has been fatally shot. Although there are certainly many such incidents and examples, it would be wrong to read this book and abandon these people to their fate. Although the book does help communicate some of the difficulties of living here, it neglects to point out that there are many positive things about living in such an ethnically diverse neighbourhood.

After many years of hearing about how Mr. Carter was a bit simple in his thought, I enjoyed it enormously. I felt in particular he was able to balance the calling of his church and faith with his understanding the nation and diversity. It was a very good book, and illustrated to me that not all Americans are of the classical variety reflected in other nations.

I was a little worried when I started it because Ms Rice built the story on theology that was a bit... idolatrous. But she built an excellent story that turned on some wonderful principles. It was an audio-book, but one that I listened to intensely.
