An idealistic young feminist is drawn into the corporate world of greed and luxury and is confused yet determined not to be sucked in. It was very good.

While Odysseus is away she must raise their son, fight off suitors and take comfort from her maids. It puts in to perspective this long-suffering wife and mother.

Ms Bruce is one who uses as much of past liberal attitudes as she can, recognizing that she could not be comfortably gay without them, and yet draws the borders of being right JUST wide enough to include her. No-one who is any more different. She exudes the classical conservative attitudes of xenophobia and hatred of the different. Her values are as diverse as the Sahara Desert.

I received it as a prize for walking and raising money for charity; at first I thought it was perfect because I am a Christian and am interested in gender issues. But I was soon proved to be completly wrong. It is contemporary Christianity at its worst. In a typical chapter she described an abortion protestor who had been put on trial for her actions. She was aquitted, which is fine, but the last line of the short story says: "As Kirsten left the courtroom, one of the pro-choice jurors looked into her eyes, smiled and winked." That one line offended me more than I can imagine. I guess I had not realized that it was so popular in contemporary Christianity to undermine the very core of our judicial system. The author apparently thinks that such collusion is something to be proud of. Is that what contempoary Chritianity is all about? Are we all so shallow and sneaky?

It could just as easily be written today; perhaps it is more appropriate. She spoke of terrorism and dominance long before it became a danger. I only hope we can learn from it. I just wish people would comment on books: especially when they don't like them!
