What worked in Persepolis works even better in Persepolis 2. Satrapi uses the graphic novel form exceptionally well, so that we really do watch her grow from a child into a teenager and finally a woman. Her torn loyalities to Iran are apparent, as is her need to live freely, which she cannot do in her beloved country. But the story is also about growing up, elements anyone can identify with. For some reason, I was most impressed that Marjane's parents sent her to a psychotherapist following her return to Iran, which until recently had been in the midst of the Iran-Iraq war. Life goes on in its usual way, even during wartime and its aftermath.
