What gets me are the conversations, the paranoid daydreams, and the trippy group tangents that have to be "broken" by a third party or sane bystander lest the individual or group follow them over the ragged edge. Fifth star withheld so far because it's almost *too* gritty. I like him better when he fragments reality and leaves his protagonists' minds (mostly) intact. ****

This one stood out because it inspired authors Murphy and Fowler to create the James Tiptree Jr. Memorial Award. Alice Sheldon was a serious influence on me when I was in high school, so this book had to be mine.

I almost forgot it existed, and having a cheap used copy literally fall into my hands yesterday was like finding $50 in an old pair of jeans. Muriel Spark said in an interview that for her writing is “like taking dictation from god,” and I would have laughed when I read that if it wasn’t so completely plausible. Highly, highly recommended. Or recommended from on high. Whatever. Read it and follow up with a nice cold dose of Miss Jean Brodie. *****

Lots of action in this one, and some interesting moments that take a heavy-handed – but very entertaining! – look at “adult” themes including sex, alcoholism, addiction, racism, consensual torture, death, general violence and alienation. Nice one, J.K. **
