Told from the perspective of the mother and 4 daughtes, spanning 35 years, the story is unbelievably rich with woven allegories and themes and lessons and the dark dirt of Africa. LOVED but would recommend only to a few.

I picked this up during a stay in Guatemala, and saw a fair number of backpackers working on it -- it's really the gringo's introduction to Guatemala. The book is a detailed history but reads like a narrative, of the author's search for that history. The narrative gets confusing at times but stick with it. The book is powerful on so many different levels, and I've never read anything like it. Wow.
