That's not to say that they can't stand on their own; they certainly can. I think that in order to get as much as possible out of each book, you need to read both. The method of story telling in each book is masterful and unique, bringing the reader to a single point in time, understanding, and character development from more than one direction at a time. The books also seem to draw on a wide base of science, theology, the arts, and political science, each topic thoroughly based in reality (as much as a work of fiction about interstellar travel can, I suppose), and backed up by a solid understanding by the author. Simply outstanding....
