What did we do before Aidan Chambers’ This is All ? Cordelia Kenn bares all, and I mean all, and frankly, you might put the book down in disgust because of it (if you hadn’t already been scared by its length.) After the first such expose, my horrified self recoiled. But I am a good reader. I am game for whatever the author wants me to do. I persevered. Relatively near the beginning, she confides to us that secretly, she was testing the lengths of her boyfriend’s unconditional love. Could she drive him away? I realize that Aidan Chambers meant for the reader to realize that he was also doing that to us. I passed the test, but what I didn’t know was that by the end of the book, I would also unconditionally love Cordelia.
Some reviews praise the “life like” characters in a novel, but Cordelia is not life like; she is real. During this book I shook in fear, I held my breath in expectation, and skipped ahead pages (something I just never do) when I couldn’t contain myself. Where other books may make you cry, this one will instead give you an ache so deep inside; it is a hurt that must be felt, not just spilt over in tears. And joy, yes, there is plenty of that, you may dance on the piano yourself, giddy. The feeling “I love this book” is second to that of “I love Cordelia,” something I have never before experienced. Granted, I didn’t really like the odd format of some of the book (you’ll figure out what I’m talking about), but I knew there was no other way.
My main reservation lies in the end chapter. Now, I will not give away the end of this book, because even if I warned people who haven’t read it to turn away now, I know (because I am one of them myself) that this will not sufficiently deter some people. I will warn you, however, to turn away at the end of the book. Do not read the last chapter. Pretend it doesn’t exist. I know you will not possibly be able to follow my directions but really, it is for your own good. Maybe this is just my own immaturity speaking, but I felt that this “full circle ending” was a false, easy way to get out of it. That’s not the way to go about things, Aidan Chambers! What I liked least was how the conclusion suddenly made Cordelia less real to me, which seemed to steal the experience of reading the entire book from me. And at 800+ pages, I do not take that theft lightly! All in all, I would not feel so strongly if this book were anything less than wonderful. I rarely read books again, but this one will be an exception.
