This memoir (memoir here being shorthand for fiction with no point) is probably more truthful to real teenagerdom than most novels of its type, but my feeling is that I already lived through non-sentimental teenage years and have done a better job boxing them up than Prep does -- it was not fun to read about. Also, for its attempts at addressing "social class, race, and gender politics" as the cover promises, it falls short. That said, Prep kept me company before bed for several weeks and was a fine way to wind down my day....
