Description: In the snatches of free time that I have had (a minute on break here, a few minutes beforeIn the snatches of free time that I have had (a minute on break here, a few minutes before bed there) I have been reading "The Bitch in the House: 26 women tell the truth about sex, solitude, work, motherhood and marriage" -- the bitch being the tounge-in-cheek counterpart to Virginia Woolf's domestic angel in the house. All of the essays are by women who are writers and most of them are by women who are roughly five or ten years older than I am. This was helpful to me for two reasons: it means that they are successful in a way that I would like to be, and it helps give me a glimps of the road ahead. Before major life events (entering high school, having sex, starting a career), I have always had a need to know about what that means, what it will be like. This is not to say that I am very good at finding out or that I am not entirely suprised when I am wrong. It simply means that this time I feel fortunate to have found so many strong voices to talk to me about what I really want to know: what is it like to be married, to have kids, to not have kids, to try to be egalitarian with house duties, to have an open marriage, to divorce, or to stay single all your life? Exactly what kind of a choice am I making here? Is anyone at all happy with balancing work and motherhood? I'm not entirely sure that I like the sorts of things that some of the essays suggested (that for many people it isn't possible without major life stress), but I appreciated the honesty. All of the essays were confessional in style and felt incredibly real and illuminating (with the exeption of Ellen Gilchrist who is older and from a different generation of writing). It was sort of like a day in the life of with backstory for a lot of sucessful interesting women.
